22- Why Weight Loss Centers Don’t Work

As I drive around the city, I started to notice that weight loss centers seem to be popping up every couple of blocks. I also noticed that in my Facebook feed, more and more people are trying to sell “weight loss” products that are supposed to be the magical cure to losing weight. There is a common theme within all of these businesses- everyone is trying to lose weight, which means there is a lot of money opportunities within that industry.

I have dug deep into some of these models for weight loss, and what is very apparent is that these programs work really well for a short amount of time, especially if you have the right amount of money. The problem here is that most people aren't able to turn these programs into a long lasting lifestyle change.

This does not mean there is something inherently wrong with you if you aren't able to be successful in the long term for weight loss. This just means that these programs are flawed, and are not teaching you how to succeed in the future.

Let's make this clear, there is no magical pill for weight loss. There is no ideal protein that will forever change the way your body holds on to weight. If you come to a company that says their magical protein powder, or carbohydrate product, or fat-filled food will fix your weight loss problems, I have one piece of advice for you- RUN.

There are weight loss centers all around where I live, and it is fascinating to see what they promote as an end-all to weight loss. Some push for an Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method, where you use their protein powder and all of their protein-rich food products to “maintain muscle mass while losing the fat”. This may work for some people, but again, protein isn't the only player when it comes to weight loss. If you are still eating foods that cause inflammatory reactions within the body, then it doesn't matter how much protein you eat, the excess inflammation will start to catabolize your muscle tissues.

Other centers promote their programs for “Weight Loss for Life”. You buy their pre-made meals at a premium price, and make sure you count your calories daily. Both are not reasonable options to ask of anyone, especially as a life-long option. Once you stop eating their foods, you go back to where you started, unfortunately.

Some centers and clinics offer a hormone drop that helps to lose 1-2lbs per day. They forget to mention that you won't be eating much food at all, and that messing with hormones can have long lasting effects on your overall health. Plus studies show it isn't the drops that make you lose weight, it is extremely low calorie diet that you go on. Which also is not sustainable.

100 years ago, “weight loss” was not an issue most people had to worry about. Which means we need to look at a couple main components when it comes to why we gain weight, and that is the quality of the food we eat, the amount of movement (or lack of movement), and the overall health of our body to make sure our digestive systems are working properly, we reduce inflammation, and the body doesn't start to turn on itself.

In this episode of Why Weight Loss Centers Don't Work, we talk all about these issues with the weight loss centers and the methods used to sell quick weight loss programs. Listen in as we dive deeper into this topic.
