This year, we have covered topics ranging from women’s health, to Alzheimer’s, to the microbiome. All of these topics are important aspects of health, and every single person has some connection to each of these conversations.
To choose the top 5 episodes, we looked at the download numbers from each episode as well as the engagement from all of you. Here is our countdown of the 5 best podcast episodes from 2018.
With 2018 coming to a quick end, it is time for us to showcase our favorite items we have used this year. We have broken it down into 4 main categories that we use:

Have you ever spent some time with a coach or trainer who put you through grueling workouts? For many of us, the answer is yes. While getting a good sweat in can feel great, if you have specific goals you want to reach, then you might need a more structured approach.
The fitness world is an interesting world because everyone has their own philosophies and their own needs. When you take a group exercise class, your goals are probably different than the person next to you.
One thing is for sure, you end up coming out of any training session sweaty and exhausted.
If your overall goal is to get into better shape, then this approach can work very well for you. But if you want to try and compete in some fitness events, such as Crossfit, then you will need a more structured approach.

The gut microbiome is one of the most powerful regions of the human body. A lot of research is coming out about the importance of the bacteria in the body, and Kiran Krishnan is one of the researchers leading the way for all of us.
The microbiome is made of around 1500 different strains of bacteria that all work together to keep the body healthy. Of the 1500 strains, we only understand around 10% of their total functionality.
With more research coming out every single day, soon we will be able to understand how each strain of bacteria impacts the body.
It seems like every single day we have more advancements in the research done on the human microbiome. Word has spread about the gut microbiome, and the genitalia microbiome. But new development is coming out in areas of the body we least expect it.
Such as the Ocular Microbiome, better known as the bacteria of the eye.
Researchers have discovered an ecosystem of the microbiome within the eye. In these early stages of research, the eye is showing to have a much smaller population of bacteria than other areas of the body, such as the gut. This does not mean that the ocular microbiome isn’t important. In fact, it could tell us more about how to protect the eye and how to prevent eye disease.
As we start to age, there are different nutritional and movement needs that we need to add into our daily lives. When it comes to the older population, it is extremely important to focus on a couple specifics:

For the elderly, these start to become extremely necessary to feel great and safe each and every day.

Roughly 1 in 4 women suffer from some form of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD). There could be quite a few areas within the pelvic floor that might not function properly, but the most common issue is incontinence. Nearly 1 in 5 women suffer from urinary incontinence, which makes up the majority of PFDs.
For an issue that is so widely spread across our communities, many of the conversations aren’t about ways to improve these issues. Most people assume that incontinence is just a byproduct of getting older.
It is no surprise that families have a hard time to create healthy routines for the entire family. With young kids running around (or even teenagers), parents who work full time, and having to actually “adult”, it can be stressful to build a healthy family.

Training kids to receive treats for doing “good” things ingrains a reward pathway in the brain where they incorporate happiness and pleasure with snacks. This doesn’t mean kids shouldn’t get treats from time to time, but we do want to make sure they enjoy real food instead of constantly falling for processed junk.
Many cultures have their own systems of energy that they correlate to the inner workings of the human body. In Chinese Medicine, these energy pathways are known as Meridians. Within the culture surrounding India, this is known as the Chakra System.
The Chakras are known as a concentrated area of energy within the body. There are over 100 Chakra locations in the body, but there are 7 points that are the most common in the Chakra System.
Dr. Steve Politis of Kineci Physical Therapy has been studying the Chakra System for many years, and has been incorporating it into his PT practice. He knows that there is much more to the body than just the physical component, therefore when he works with patients he is able to work with them on a deeper level.
Autoimmunity is where the body’s own immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues within the body. This can result in many issues such as low thyroid, systemic pain in the muscles, and forms of arthritis.
Usually those suffering from autoimmunity will have to take each day one day at a time. They could feel great today, and rundown tomorrow. This can make exercising a real challenge because you may not feel up for it.
Julia Morichelli is a fitness trainer who also suffers from autoimmunity. She has been diagnosed with multiple autoimmune conditions, so she knows all too well how difficult exercising can be.
There are fitness studios, gyms, and performance centers for the exercise enthusiasts. And for those who are injured there are physical therapy clinics and chiropractic offices. It makes sense to separate out these specialties into their own spaces.
But can you actually combine all of these areas of the health and wellness industry together? In physical therapy can the exercise someone needs to heal from an injury also be used as a way to increase their fitness level? And vice versa, can an exercise at the gym help with the rehab process, or even prevent an injury from occurring?
Our guest Pat McCloskey answers these questions within this podcast episode. At his training studio they are combining fitness routines with the rehabilitation process.

This is why we celebrate Gold, Silver and Bronze for events, because if we had a fourth option, it would be more difficult to remember. This is also why many books are written in 3s, such as trilogies, or the 3 musketeers.
This is why the power of the triad becomes so important in any kind of rehab protocol. If we focus on groups of three, the brain and the body, plus the spirit (see what I did there??) will be impacted in a much more powerful way.
